Ordinary people don't talk like politicians before they run for office –but we need them in politics

My selection as the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London should be a signal that politics isn’t just a playground for the rich and connected. That a black man raised by a single mum in one of the poorest areas of London could claim such a prize is a reminder that, in this city, anything is possible.

I sit on the London Assembly but my life is very much one most Londoners would recognise. I’ve chased cheap rent all over the city; I rely on public transport; and my wife and I worry about keeping our kids safe from rising violent crime.
